Opportunities within the university and beyond.
Decolonising Environmentalism Postgraduate Symposium
The Environmental Humanities Network are hosting a PG symposium on April 27th, 10am -3.30pm . We would like to invite all masters and PhD students to submit proposals to present on the day. Presentations will be 10-15 minutes each.
Presentations will be followed by an artist workshop following the theme of Decolonising the Outdoors. More details to follow.
The aim of this event is to spotlight the work done by students across the university, who focus on anti-colonial methods of environmental studies. By decentering the Eurocentric methodology, we make space for culturally rich resources, that span beyond the western scope. An emphasis on Indigenous knowledge is needed to achieve a more well-rounded approach to topics of Environmentalism and Sustainability. By dismantling colonial structures, we are simultaneously reworking gendered, classist and race orientated power structures, that have saturated the field of sustainability for centuries.
Deadline for applications is Friday April 3rd.

In partnership with the University of St Andrews, Corrour has established itself as a living laboratory where research and restoration run side by side. The intern will join the Corrour Conservation Team to help advance understanding of how biodiversity responds to peatland restoration, through a project that combines desk-based analysis with field work. The placement will contribute to assessing the biodiversity outcomes of Corrour’s decadal peatland restoration programme, while offering first-hand experience of applied ecological research in a real-world setting.
“Ecology and Empire” visual culture seminar ( July 20-24, 2026, Worcester MA)
This summer, the American Antiquarian Society’s Center for Historic American Visual Culture (CHAViC) is offering a week-long seminar on pre-1900 American visual and material culture. Please follow the link provided below for program details and instructions on how to apply.
“Ecology and Empire” (July 20-24, 2026). Taught by Maggie Cao (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). Confirmed guest speakers include Alan Braddock (College of William & Mary) and Stacy Kamehiro (University of California, Santa Cruz).
This summer seminar will examine the intersections of ecology and empire in the nineteenth-century United States, when environments were sites of cultural encounter, conquest, and resistance. Participants will use an environmental humanities lens to explore the visual and material culture of scientific expedition, surveying, natural history, extraction, conservation, gardens, and agriculture. Through close study of the American Antiquarian Society’s extensive collections of prints, drawings, photographs, maps, and other primary sources, participants will consider visual representations of nature, including materials extracted from the natural world, that reveal colonial power, persuasion, and resistance.
The tuition fee for the seminar is $1,000, which includes a field trip to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, meals throughout the week, and evening receptions. Partial tuition scholarships may be available for graduate students and early career scholars.
Scottish Nature Connection Showcase
Amy Manvell, St Andrews Sustainability Coordinator, would like to invite you to consider taking part in the Scottish Nature Connection Showcase, which she is helping to organise as a participant in the biodiversity action group of this year’s Climate Action Leadership Programme (CALP).
This Showcase aims to create a celebration of the ways that people connect with nature and biodiversity. It encourages all residents of Scotland to reflect on and share creative work based on personal experiences with nature. This may be a chance to highlight connections you are already making! Submissions are welcomed from individuals and groups.
If interested, please check the Scottish Nature Connection Showcase website (https://scotnatureshowcase.co.uk/) for more information about the in-person showcase, submission guidance, and inspiration.
You can register your interest to receive occasional emails offering support and reminders of the key deadline (1 May). Contact [email protected] with questions or comments. Many thanks!
